TV highlights Wednesday night:

The presidential debate, hyped for days like a sporting event, will unfold live at 9 p.m. ET on many channels. ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC will preempt their regular schedules for the Barack Obama-Mitt Romney face-off. CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC are among the cable channels delivering the 90-minute event from Denver. PBS is airing the debate, which is moderated by PBS’ Jim Lehrer.

A USA Today poll found that one in five Americans say the debates could change their voting plans. Citizens may say they want substance, but in recent days TV newscasts have replayed the costly gaffes (sweaty Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford on Eastern Europe) or the memorable quips (Ronald Reagan in ‘80 and ‘84).

In entertainment programming:

***CBS is promoting the stealthy moves by “Facts of Life” star Lisa Whelchel in the “Survivor” at 8 o’clock. The big news, however, seems to be that a castaway is injured while competing in a challenge.

***”The X Factor” shifts to Miami for boot camp. Fox offers an hour of Simon Cowell and Britney Spears at 8, then shifts to the presidential debate.

***ABC is promoting that Patricia Heaton’s character loses her job on “The Middle” at 8. At least Heaton is in a good sitcom. The three new sitcoms airing tonight are inferior. They are “The Neighbors” at 8:30 on ABC and two on NBC, “Animal Practice” at 8 and “Guys With Kids” at 8:30.

***If you want an alternative to Obama and Romney, you can look to Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. They’re back in “Supernatural,” which starts its eighth season at 9 on The CW. In cancellation-happy TV, lasting eight seasons is an achievement.

***If you want Honey Boo Boo, try “South Park” at 10 on Comedy Central. It is not the real Honey Boo Boo, of course. The animated comedy skewers the pint-size reality star by depicting her visit to a pig farm. Now that’s another alternative to the presidential debate.
